Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts!
And see if there be any grievous way in me,and lead me in the way everlasting!
Psalm 139:23-24 (ESV)
In this new series we focus on our CEF Culture Points. The first one is:
Importance of Godly Leadership at Every Level
Spiritual leadership is the highest form of authority. The men and women who lead must have a personal heart for God in order to be able to discern the will of God and lead the ministry effectively. Regardless of the skill of a leader, if he or she lacks a heart for God, the work will be eroded at its very foundation.
Godly leadership comes from a heart for God.
Even before David was anointed king, the Lord had explained to him that in the future it would not count for God how often he would beat the Philistines, but if he had a heart for God. “The LORD looks on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).
To look on my heart means that the Lord examines my true intentions in what I say and my true motives in what I do. Obviously God is more interested in the invisible part of my person and ministry than in the visible part of it. He is more interested in the way I work than in the results of my work. (My heart determines the way I work. The results come from God’s blessing on my work.)
How do I get a heart that pleases God and is able to discern the will of God?
- While I memorise the verse I make it my earnest prayer that God will search my heart and bring to light any wrong intentions or motives.
- I confess my wrong intentions. Christ does not only forgive, He also cleanses me from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9), which will help me to stop working with wrong motives.
- I deliberately replace whatever was wrong with right motives and intentions.
When I follow God’s leading in the way everlasting, my ministry will produce fruit everlasting!
Each of us will either contribute to build or erode the foundation of our work. By prayerfully memorising the Word of God you will move towards godly leadership on your level!
